Sportfreunde Siegen avoided a double-digit defeat against BVB, while KFC Uerdingen is finding its feet with a completely new squad. BVB won 8-1 (6-1) against Regionalliga newcomers Sportfreunde Siegen. Twenty days before the DFB Cup opener against Rot-Weiss Essen, BVB put in a convincing performance against the fourth-division side. After returning from the Club World Cup, a short break, and the resumption of training, it was the first outing for coach Niko Kovac’s team in front of 18,500 spectators in a sold-out stadium in Siegen. Emre Can (adductor problems), Julien Duranville (shoulder), Gregor Kobel, Ramy Bensebaini, and Serhou Guirassy (load management). After just 27 minutes, the score was 4-0 thanks to goals from Elias Benkara, Julian Brandt, Marcel Sabitzer, and Karim Adeyemi. After two more goals, BVB led 6-0 shortly before half-time, before Josue Santos pulled one back for the regional league side to make it 6-1 at the break. After the break, BVB took their foot off the gas somewhat. Maximilian Beier and Ayman Azhil made it 8-1, which was the final score after 90 minutes.
Fewer goals in Uerdingen’s test match in Obercastrop
In another test match, Lower Rhine Oberliga side KFC Uerdingen faced Westfalenliga side Wacker Obercastrop. After a goalless first half, KFC won 4-1. Kingsley Helmut Marcinek put the Oberliga side ahead, but one minute later, World Cup winner and former KFC player Marcel Großkreutz equalized for the Westfalenliga side.
The goals came thick and fast during this phase, with Derick Kwaku Gyamfi making it 2-1 for KFC three minutes after the 1-1 equalizer, and Alexander Lipinski scoring twice shortly before the end to make it 3-1 and 4-1.
KFC will continue their preparations on Sunday, when they face Westfalen-Oberliga side TuS Ennepetal in their season opener.
