Borussia Dortmund have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in three years. BVB won the second leg of the round of 16 tie against PSV Eindhoven 2:0 on Wednesday evening.
With full-throttle soccer and unbridled passion, Borussia Dortmund reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in three years – and now a night of frenetic action against the big boys awaits. BVB regained strengths they thought they had lost in the second leg of the round of 16 tie against PSV Eindhoven in a 2:0 (1:0) win, which was particularly convincing in the first half, and triumphantly opened their ground-breaking weeks thanks to Jadon Sancho’s lightning goal (3rd). Marco Reus (90.+5) made everything clear in stoppage time.
When the quarter-final draw is made on Friday in Nyon/Switzerland, the absolute giants of European soccer will be in the pot – and old acquaintances such as Manchester City with Erling Haaland or Real Madrid with Jude Bellingham. A clash with Bayern Munich is also possible, there are no longer any restrictions. In the league, hugely important games against Leverkusen, Stuttgart, Bayern and Leipzig await.
Terzic had urged his players in the DAZN interview before kick-off to “leave nothing in the tank” – and BVB did indeed start in turbo gear. It took just 75 seconds for Ian Maatsen to create the first huge chance, Sancho scored shortly afterwards with an 18-meter shot and the stadium shook. PSV were overrun and after ten minutes BVB had three great chances and five shots on goal: Donyell Malen, who once played for Eindhoven, almost made it 2-0 from an acute angle (16′). Dortmund exploited their advantage in speed mercilessly.
Mats Hummels organized the game from the back. The veteran defender had not started in the last seven league games and, as expected, replaced the yellow card suspended Nico Schlotterbeck in central defense in the sold-out stadium (81,365 spectators) on Wednesday evening. Hummels played alongside Emre Can, as Niklas Süle had to help out on the right due to the absence of Julian Ryerson.
However, the defense had little to do at first: BVB turned up the heat like never before this season. PSV, unbeaten in 25 league games this season, needed half an hour to get halfway into the game. From time to time, the visitors even made an appearance in Dortmund’s penalty area, but after losing the ball, they repeatedly sprinted desperately after steep passes. However, BVB loosened their iron grip from the opening phase
After the break, Malen could have calmed the nerves of his team-mates again, but he failed to beat PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez from a turn (48′). Former BVB coach Peter Bosz now inevitably had to take more risks: The post shot from substitute Hirving Lozano (53) and a chance from Jordan Teze (56) were a warning to BVB. Eindhoven had clearly been the better team in the first leg three weeks ago (1:1), and now Dortmund were suddenly making more and more misplaced passes.
Terzic raised his hands questioningly during this phase, his team lacked access and Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko finished dangerously (71′). Niclas Füllkrug’s goal (77′) was then the supposed redemption – but the striker was very slightly offside
