New season, new evaluation period: BVB has defended its place in the Uefa five-year ranking. Bayer Leverkusen is closing in
Both Borussia Dortmund and Bayer 04 Leverkusen played in international finals last season – and lost. While BVB was beaten 2:0 by Real Madrid in the Champions League final, Bayer 04 lost 3:0 to Atalanta Bergamo in the Europa League final. Nevertheless, the Werkself jumped up in Uefa’s Europe-wide club rankings.
Uefa uses the club coefficient to take into account the performance of all clubs playing internationally in the current and past four seasons. A ranking list is produced based on the results of the clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League seasons assessed. This determines the seedings in the draw for the respective competition.
Bayer Leverkusen in the Uefa ranking: Only Real Madrid was better in 2023/24, BVB on par
The current Uefa ranking evaluates the upcoming 2024/25 season up to and including 2020/21. The teams with the best chances of achieving a good ranking are those that have played internationally in all seasons, as they have been able to collect points five times. Both Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund meet this criterion.
Compared to the assessment period a year ago, the Werkself jumped from 13th to eleventh place with 76,000 points, narrowly missing out on the top ten. With 29,000 points, the fabulous 2023/24 season with just one defeat is particularly significant. Only Real Madrid (34,000 points) were even better.
Uefa rankings: Borussia Dortmund must continue to line up behind Villareal
BVB also earned 29,000 points for their strong Champions League campaign, which only just ended against the Whites. Borussia Dortmund thus defended its eighth place in the five-year ranking (79,000 points), but still has to line up behind FC Villareal (82,000 points). However, that is likely to change soon: FC Villareal still benefits from its 2020/21 Europa League title (30,000 points), which will drop out of the rankings in a year’s time.
