The German Tour de France newcomer Phil Bauhaus missed his first stage win right at the beginning of the Tour by a hair’s breadth. But the second place of the rider from Bocholt gives hope for the further course of the cycling classic.
Jasper Phlipsen won the third stage of the Tour de France, which led from the Spanish Basque country into French territory for the first time. In second place, German Tour debutant Phil Bauhaus narrowly missed a sensation at the finish in Bayonne. Third place went to Australian Caleb Ewan.
Adam Yates’ yellow jersey was not in danger. The Briton still leads the overall standings by six seconds over his Slovenian teammate Tadej Pogacar and his twin brother Simon Yates.
Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark is in sixth place.
Philipsen had already won two stages in the 2022 edition. In Bayonne, he benefited from good preparation in the sprint by team-mate Mathieu van der Poel. The stage started in Amorebieta-Etxano. It led over 193 kilometres to the finish in Bayonne.
This Tuesday, the peloton will ride 181 kilometres from Dax to Nogaro. The route is again made for sprinters. At the end, it goes straight ahead for 800 metres on a slight incline.
