The SG Wattenscheid has announced another personnel decision. The captain is staying and will not only be on the pitch in the future.
SG Wattenscheid 09 has finalised another personnel decision for the upcoming season. Captain Marvin Schurig signed a new contract and will stay at the Lohrheide – regardless of whether the relegation to the Oberliga Westfalen remains or the club moves up to the Regionalliga West instead of 1. FC Düren, who did not receive a licence.
The 34-year-old Schurig has played at Wattenscheid since 2020 and is an absolute leader in head coach Christian Britscho’s team. In future, he will also take on responsibility off the pitch. Schurig moves up to the coaching team, but at the same time remains in the squad.
Despite other requests, the contract extension was not difficult for him, the defender explained. “I still feel very comfortable, even though the last season didn’t go optimally. I would compare Wattenscheid to a marriage – you don’t leave your wife just because the last season didn’t go well. You should rather work on it together!”, says Schurig. “When I was allowed to join this great club in 2020, I made a promise to the people in charge and the fans during the rebuilding process. I want to and will continue to keep that promise.”
Schurig played 25 games in the past season, bringing his total to 59 appearances for SGW. He previously played for Rot Weiss Ahlen, TuS Haltern, SC Hassel, SpVgg Erkenschwick, Wuppertaler SV and VfB Hüls.
Schurig emphasises that he is honoured that he will also be in demand as a coach in the future. “In the last three games of the season, Christian Britscho has actively asked me for my opinion time and again. Christian knows that he always gets an honest assessment from me. This will be one of my tasks in the coming season. I will learn a lot from his experience as a coach.” Schurig announced his intention to acquire the B and A coaching licences in the future.
Sports director Christian Pozo y Tamayo is pleased: “Schuh had once said that he would like to end his career with us at some point. We are happy that he will stay with us as a player for at least another year and that he will also support our coaching team.
