Five matchdays before the end of the season, SSVg Velbert are bottom of the table and nine points off the pace. But nobody wants to give up in the Bergisches Land.
The fewest wins (6), the fewest goals (29) and the most goals conceded (66) in the Regionalliga West: SSVg Velbert are a whopping nine points behind Borussia Mönchengladbach II, who occupy the first non-relegation spot, with five matchdays to go until the end of the season. A “mission impossible” really.
But the fighting spirit is still there in Bergisch – even though the sports and games club has been winless for five games. “We in the team still believe in it. We want to create the miracle! Our task is to give everything until the bitter end. We can’t be blamed for anything in the end,” emphasized Marcel Lenz.
Velbert’s number one is also feverishly following his heart club MSV Duisburg. Should MSV somehow remain in the 3rd division after all, then only three instead of four Regionalliga West teams would have to go down to the Oberliga.
“As a Duisburg boy, it hurts my soul what’s happening to MSV. I thought for the entire season that they would get their act together. Now it looks different. Nevertheless, I hope that there will still be a happy ending – for MSV and Velbert too,” said the SSVg captain.
I would also go to the Oberliga. I’ve extended my contract for another year. Velbert has become a very special place and club for me.
Marcel Lenz
He adds with a smile: “Now my ex-club RWE also has to help MSV and win in Mannheim. If Duisburg then go ahead in Ingolstadt on Saturday, it would only be five points.”
The Velbert side travel to the U21s of 1. FC Köln on Saturday (April 20, 2 p.m.). Lenz is combative: “We’ll give it everything we’ve got. We will scratch and bite. It’s about the regional league! We all want to stay in it.”
Either way, the Velbert goalkeeper, who has been under contract at the Sonnenblume since 2021, has already decided on his future. Lenz revealed to Forecasting: “I would also go to the top division. I’ve extended my contract for another year. Velbert has now become a very special place and club for me. “
