winger Finn Wortmann is indispensable for the Spielvereinigung Erkenschwick soccer club. In an interview, the 24-year-old revealed what makes him so special at ESV.
Last weekend, Finn Wortmann scored a brace to secure the next victory for Spielvereinigung Erkenschwick (2:1 against FC Eintracht Rheine). The 24-year-old once again underlined his importance to the team. He is able to coolly convert chances that others miss.
The forward has been turning out at the Stimberg since 2020, and this season he even took over the armband. Despite his consistently good goal scoring rate, why has he stayed at ESV so far? “When you play here, something grabs you. I felt that right away. I can completely identify with the club. It’s great fun playing here. It’s a construct of the whole team, the fans, the coaching staff. When I enjoy coming to football, I also play better. That’s why a change has never really been an issue,” Wortmann reveals.
Head coach Magnus Niemöller also played a major role in his steady progress. The “Schwicker” legend worked with the winger for the first time in the Westfalenliga and shaped him into one of the best players in the Oberliga.
“Magnus has played a major role in my career. This coach does everything he can to make his team successful. I have certainly never seen anyone else prepare for a game so meticulously and try to rule out every variable. He stands for successful football – that’s what makes him stand out,” says Wortmann about the successful coach.
Wortmann’s statistics this season are seven goals and three assists in 13 league games. Last season, he contributed a total of 19 scorers in 35 Oberliga games. But now the attacker is not only in demand as a boxer, but also more and more as a creative engine and driving force in Erkenschwick’s offensive play.
“We are absolutely delighted with him and the spirit he brings to the team time and again. He is certainly one of our top performers and has developed fantastically in the two and a half years I’ve had him. Finn lives football. He knows everyone – from the Oberliga to the Bundesliga. He even follows the Spanish league. Maybe that helps a little bit somewhere,” says Niemöller about the “football freak”.
The fans of the traditional club also honor his commitment and the performance that Wortmann brings to the field week after week. The greatest accolade: comparisons with Stefan Oerterer – the absolute club legend.
“There are players who have followed the Erkenschwick path over a longer period of time. Whether “Ö” or Finn Wortmann – these are players who have set milestones over the last few years, or in Oerterer’s case even decades,” praises coach Niemöller. If his most efficient player stays on board for a while longer, he expects him to achieve a similar standing in the future: ‘Finn is someone who is on his way there.’
