Carried off the pitch after BVB victory – serious concerns for Cologne defender

1. FC Köln lost the match against Borussia Dortmund – and also lost their defensive leader Timo Hübers, who appeared to have suffered a serious injury.

Jubilation and ecstasy at Borussia Dortmund, frustration and disappointment at 1. FC Köln – and not just because of the late goal that BVB scored against Köln in Saturday evening’s Bundesliga top match. Deep into injury time, Maximilian Beier scored the goal that made it 1-0 to Dortmund.

FC had already had to digest a shock: defensive leader Timo Hübers was injured in the final stages, possibly seriously. The 29-year-old remained on the ground after a tackle with BVB striker Serhou Guirassy. With a pain-contorted face, he held his right knee. His teammates rushed over, looking shocked and clasping their hands over their heads. In the end, paramedics carried Hübers away in tears. “It hurts just watching,” said Sky expert Lothar Matthäus. Commentator Wolff-Christoph Fuss said, “Oh my God. That looks like a very bad injury.” Examinations will reveal the extent of Hübers’ injury. However, after the final whistle, coach Lukas Kwasniok assumed that the experienced center back had been seriously injured. “This doesn’t look like a six-week break, but more like several months,” Kwasniok told Sky.

The coach continued: “It was a double zero for us today. We lost the game, but above all we lost a very important player, who is also very important for the dressing room on a personal level,” Kwasniok lamented. BVB coach Niko Kovac hoped “that it’s not too bad and just a minor shock. I wish him all the best. Nobody wants to see him carried off the pitch injured.”

Adding to the bitterness: since Cologne had already made all their substitutions, they had to finish the game with ten men. Nevertheless, until shortly before the end, it looked as if Cologne could take a point from Dortmund. It was only in the sixth minute of stoppage time that Beier scored the 1-0.
