There were many farewells at VfL Bochum after last season. Here’s how the departures started at their new clubs.
Simon Zoller: Due to a lack of perspective, the long-time crowd favorite decided against another year in Bochum. Shortly before the transfer deadline, Zoller moved to FC St. Pauli. However, the 32-year-old did not make his first appearance until this week – in a test match. Muscular problems prevented an earlier debut for the second division leaders.
Gerrit Holtmann: The winger is another fan favorite to leave Castroper Straße. Things have not been going well at loan club Antalyaspor so far. Holtmann has yet to score his first goal (one assist) and recently came off the bench after an injury.
Vasilios Lampropoulos: Back in his native Greece, the central defender mainly took on the role of a substitute in the first few weeks. Lampropoulos has played five of a possible seven league games for OFI Crete so far, twice featuring in the starting eleven.
Silvère Ganvoula: From a reserve role at VfL to his Champions League debut with Young Boys Bern, Ganvoula has made the climb. The striker is used more often than in Bochum, mostly from the bench. He has scored twice so far in 14 appearances for the Swiss league runners-up.
Jacek Góralski: His move to VfL turned out to be a misunderstanding. After one season, the contract was terminated – and the former Polish international caused a stir when he joined fourth-division club Wieczysta Krakow. There, Góralski wears the captain’s armband.
Konstantinos Stafylidis: The only summer departure from Bochum, the Greek defensive player is without a new club.
Dominique Heintz: After his loan year, Heintz returned to regular club Union Berlin and moved to 1. FC Köln. With the Domstädtern, for whom he already played from 2015 to 2018, Heintz is at the bottom of the Bundesliga table – and has only recorded one brief appearance.
Marko Johansson: The substitute goalkeeper was promptly loaned out after his return to Hamburger SV. He is now a regular between the posts at first-division club Halmstads BK in his native Sweden. The club is fighting against relegation.
Saidy Janko: Together with Ganvoula, last year’s loaner plays for Young Boys Bern. There, the experienced right-back was part of the starting eleven in the first weeks of the season, but lately he has only been on the bench.
