On the public holiday, Borussia Dortmund and TSG Hoffenheim battled it out for the U19 German championship. TSG won with 3:1.
The Niederrhein Stadium in Oberhausen was the venue for the big U19 final for the German championship between Borussia Dortmund and TSG Hoffenheim on Thursday afternoon. Both teams secured the championship title this season and qualified for the final via the semi-finals.
In front of a fantastic crowd of 5,329 fans, Hoffenheim prevailed 3:1 (1:1) and were crowned German champions 2024, succeeding FSV Mainz 05.
But first things first: An open, varied and fast-paced match developed in the first half. Hoffenheim got off to the better start: After a precise free-kick cross, U17 World Cup winner Max Moerstedt headed his team into the lead (20′).
From then on, both teams had their chances, but BVB became increasingly active – and were finally rewarded at the break: Young Paris Brunner beat his opponent well in the 45th minute and scored the equalizer from close range. The teams went into the break with a fair 1:1 draw
In the early stages of the second half, Dortmund and Hoffenheim were evenly matched and clear chances were few and far between. It was another set-piece situation that led to a goal: Hoffenheim left-back Paul Hennrich curled a direct free-kick into the net – 2:1 for TSG (66′).
BVB were relatively unimpressed by the renewed deficit and put on the pressure again in the closing stages, but without really becoming compelling. There were no clear goalscoring opportunities. In the 87th minute, the champions’ dream came to an end:
Dortmund made a fatal mistake in their build-up play, which Hoffenheim exploited with ice-cold precision. Blessing Makanda made the decision from eleven meters, the ball landing over the inside post in the BVB goal. The new German champions were thus crowned
