Citizens’ initiative successful – Jahnstadion in Marl stays

The citizens’ initiative to preserve the Jahnstadion forest was successful. The time-honoured Jahnstadion in Marl will remain.

Since 2017, the citizens’ initiative to preserve the Jahnstadion forest has been fighting to keep the time-honoured Jahnstadion in Marl. An investor had plans to use the site for a luxury housing development. In addition, 300 old beech trees were to be felled for the project. RevierSport reported.

Last Thursday, the Marl city council met to discuss this project and the citizens’ initiative was successful – the Jahnstadion in Marl will remain. Even before the meeting began, the citizens’ initiative thought it had a good chance, but now there is finally certainty.

“Last Thursday there was the decisive council meeting. We from the citizens’ initiative have been fighting for this project since 2017 and have now been successful. The majority of the council decided that the stadium and the surrounding forest will be preserved. Of course, this decision makes us incredibly happy,” said Rudolf Pohlmann from the citizens’ initiative.

Pohlmann himself still has fond memories of the former venue of TSV Marl-Hüls. TSV played in the time-honoured stadium until 2005, after which the club moved to the sports facility in Loekamp. In addition, the Jahnstadion has been home to the Marl Sly Dogs baseball team since 2008.

“The stadium has a great location and an incomparable flair. The surrounding beech trees are also very important for the district and that everything will now be preserved is a great feeling.”

“In the 70s, I experienced it live when TSV was competing for the German amateur football championship. Back then, there were thousands of spectators and when the sun shone through the Buchenwald onto the pitch, there was always an incredibly great atmosphere. The stadium has a great location and an incomparable flair. The surrounding beech trees are also very important for the district and the fact that everything will now be preserved is a great feeling,” says Pohlmann in reference to the initiative’s latest success.

The decision on how exactly to proceed with the Jahnstadion in Marl now lies with the city administration. For the citizens’ initiative, however, the decision on the existence of the stadium is already a huge success after years of struggle.
