The U19 of FC Schalke 04 is still playing for two titles this season. On Wednesday evening, the Königsblauen took another step on the way there.
FC Schalke 04’s U19s narrowly missed out on participation in the final round of the German championship, but two titles are still possible for Norbert Elgert’s team: in addition to the DFB Junior Cup, where the Königsblauen will face 1. FC Köln in the final (Sunday, April 30), the Westfalenpokal beckons.
The Schalkers are now in the semifinals of the national competition, where they will face Borussia Dortmund in the Revier derby (not yet scheduled) – just like the U17s in the quarterfinals of the B Juniors Westphalia Cup.
The ticket for the round of the last four solved S04 on Wednesday evening in a sovereign manner. In the away match against SC Wiedenbrück, the favorite won clearly with 6:0.
Erik Lanfer gave Schalke an early lead (8th), Yannick Tonye increased the lead with a lightning double in first-half stoppage time (45.+3, 45.+4). After the break, Max Grüger put the score at 4:0 (46th). In the final phase, Niklas Dörr (81st) and Niklas Barthel (90th) also scored.
The upcoming opponent BVB, who will play against Mainz 05 for the German championship this weekend, had already entered the semifinals at the end of March, winning 2-0 at SC Verl. And it is even already certain which opponent awaits the winner in the final. Namely, SC Paderborn. The East Westphalians defeated VfL Bochum 2-1 in the first semifinal.
If Schalke were to lift the trophy, it would be tantamount to defending the title. Last year, the Knappen triumphed after beating Borussia Dortmund 3:1 in the final.
