Two days after a fan caused a black screen on the VAR monitor in Münster, SCP is still in the dark about the perpetrator.
According to second division club Preußen Münster, there is still no information about the perpetrator in the investigation into the sabotage of a video evidence monitor by a masked fan. “Important findings have been made, but the perpetrator has not yet been identified,” the Westphalia club said. According to its own statements, the club is continuing to work intensively to clarify the incident.
During Sunday’s 1-2 defeat to Hertha BSC at the Preußen Stadium, referee Felix Bickel wanted to review a foul by Münster’s Niko Koulis on Berlin’s Michael Cuisance in the penalty area on the monitor at the edge of the pitch shortly before half-time. However, the screen remained black because a Preußen fan had disconnected the cable connection shortly before. A banner was briefly held up in the Münster fan block, which read: “Pull the plug on VAR.”
According to the club, the action was “extremely quick and targeted.” “Unfortunately, the steward stationed in this area and the technical service provider’s employees had no way of recognizing the situation in such a short time and reacting to it,” the SCP said. No damage was done to the device. Additional stewards then protected the technology.
SC Preußen Münster clearly contradicted a claim by the Sportinformationsdienst (SID), which was cited by Kicker and Bild, among others, that the power supply to an entire section of the stands had been cut off: “It has been proven that only one power cable leading to the monitor was disconnected. The fault was rectified immediately by plugging in the cable, but the disconnected cable could not be immediately identified as the cause of the monitor failure.”

The German Football Association later announced that, due to this incident and the use of pyrotechnics, the DFB Control Committee had initiated proceedings against Preußen Münster. Münster apologized to referee Bickel and video assistant Katrin Rafalski.
“Neither the club nor the partners responsible for providing the VAR monitor had anticipated such an act of sabotage. In future, this area will be secured with additional personnel,” explained the Eagles. The club is also looking into further technical and organizational protective measures.
