Third division club Rot-Weiss Essen will be hosting Borussia Dortmund II on Friday evening. After conceding nine goals in two games recently, the focus is on the defense.
After the 0:5 defeat against SC Verl, Christoph Dabrowski, head coach of Rot-Weiss Essen, announced a ruthless analysis. In the meantime, a few days have passed and RWE used the time to come to terms with the worst game of the season. At the press conference before the away game (October 13, 7 p.m.) at Borussia Dortmund’s U23, Dabrowski talked about the analysis.
“Of course, we also discussed it with the team. As a group, we talked very intensively about the things that are necessary. You could see, especially in the second half against Verl, that if a team doesn’t act together, it won’t work. It is important to sharpen the senses in such a way that you can overcome resistance even in difficult phases. But now we also have to look ahead and turn the right levers.”
Looking ahead now, RWE will be focusing on the upcoming task at BVB II. The third-division club will be accompanied by at least 7200 fans on the short trip to Dortmund. One thing is clear: the team cannot afford another performance like the one in Unterhaching or against Verl. That’s why there are also considerations to make several changes in the starting eleven to give one or the other player a break to think.
Dabrowski is ambivalent on this subject: “Of course, you think in all directions. Basically, however, I think it’s important to continue to show confidence in one or the other player in a situation where you’re experiencing resistance. That’s where we have to weigh things up. “
First and foremost, of course, we trust the guys who are there. But it’s also clear that we’re thinking about what might be feasible in the short term. Whether there is perhaps a constellation with a contractless player that this player could help us. Anything else would be negligent.

In addition, the personnel situation in the defensive unit is extremely tight: Felix Bastians has been suspended, Felix Götze as well as Ekin Celebi are currently out injured and there is still a question mark behind Andreas Wiegel – at least for the Dortmund game.
Asked whether Rot-Weiss Essen would consider signing a defender without a club, Dabrowski replied: “First and foremost, of course, we trust the guys who are there. But it’s also clear that we are thinking about what might be feasible in the short term. Whether there is perhaps a constellation with a contractless player that this player could help us. Anything else would be negligent. But it’s not that easy to find a suitable player. That’s why we have complete confidence in the personnel we have. “
