Coach Behnke extended – “always felt the backing of the club”

The ESC Rellinghausen and coach Sasche Behnke extend their cooperation again.

ESC Rellinghausen has opted for continuity and extended the contract with head coach Sascha Behnke by two years. The 45-year-old is already in his sixth season as coach of Rellinghausen.

“We are delighted to be continuing our successful work with Sascha. Sascha has done an outstanding job at ESC Rellinghausen 06 over many years and over many seasons has formed a close-knit team that thrives on team spirit and commitment. Under Sascha, talented young players were regularly integrated and formed into permanent players in the national league. We would like to continue on this path together, whereby the further development of the young team remains the main focus,” said Velican Özgür, the club’s first chairman, delighted with Behnke’s commitment.

“I feel at home at the club, which is why I am naturally happy to continue as a coach and as a person. I have always felt the support of the club in all phases. Whether it was when we finished second or were really at the bottom – you don’t go crazy in the positive direction or question everything in the negative,” said the coach himself, explaining his renewed extension.

Behnke has been on the sidelines for the ESC since 2018 and has established the club in the national league. In the last two seasons, Rellinghausen first sniffed at the Oberliga (2nd place 2021/22) and then narrowly avoided relegation (relegation with a two-point lead 2022/23)

Our goals remain the same. We want to ensure the club is on a sound footing and put it on an even healthier and stronger footing.

In the current season, ESC Rellinghausen is in eleventh place for the winter, but the cushion on the relegation places is not yet reassuring. After the indoor city championship and a few test matches, the team will go straight into action on February 11 against bottom-placed Hönnepel-Niedermörmter for important points.

Establishing themselves in the national league also remains a long-term priority. “Our goals remain the same. We want the club to be on a sound footing and build an even healthier and stronger foundation,” explains Behnke. The ESC avoids big goals. “We know that it would be very difficult to manage the top division in Rellinghausen. It’s about continuously improving the club by improving the players and relying on young players. We’ll have to see how that develops. Our first goal is to have nothing to do with the bottom.”

Off the pitch, Behnke also wants to develop the club further. “Apart from that, it’s important to me to create a family environment. Something has grown together again between the coaching team and the team after last year, and that fits,” reports the ESC coach.
