Coach Sahin on the ground – sports director with a declaration of loyalty

Borussia Dortmund is currently causing its fans a lot of headaches and worries. Coach Nuri Sahin is the subject of almost daily debate.

The disappointments in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League have now been followed by a bitter cup exit for Borussia Dortmund in Dortmund. However, there will be no consequences for the time being.

After the cup exit at VfL Wolfsburg, Sahin’s job as coach is not in danger. “We will stand together. We will get through this together,” said sports director Sebastian Kehl after the 1-0 defeat in the 117th minute of extra time.

Asked what this second-round exit would mean for Sahin, Kehl said: “Nothing!” This is “not a situation that Borussia Dortmund has not faced in the past”.

After his confession of loyalty to Sahin, Kehl continued: “The mood in the dressing room was one of great disappointment and great calm. The team took to the task really well from the first minute, controlled the game and created goal chances. In the end, we are knocked out, and that’s bitter. Everyone wanted to, and some went beyond their limits. I can’t reproach the team. It’s also clear that we’re not satisfied with the overall situation regarding the results. We have to stand together, work hard on things – as we tried to do in Wolfsburg. We’re lagging behind our own standards. But we’re going through this together.”

Sahin himself also answered questions from reporters after the game and was a guest on both ARD and Sky. He seemed, understandably, very down and just sad.

The 36-year-old BVB coach took stock after the DFB Cup exit: “The boys are extremely disappointed. A speech in the dressing room wouldn’t do any good in a hurry. We have to process this first. The disappointment is huge for me and the players. We really wanted to go to the final in Berlin. But it all feels like it’s coming together. Sportingly, it’s not going well. It hurts a lot right now, but we have to get up again tomorrow morning.”

Regarding the discussions about his coaching position, the former professional of BVB, Real Madrid and Liverpool said: ‘It’s not about me as a person. It’s about the club and I have a responsibility as a coach.’
