Some favorites are still struggling in the 3. Liga. Right at the forefront: TSV 1860 Munich, which really embarrassed itself on Sunday. The coach didn’t mince words.
4,000 fans of TSV 1860 Munich traveled to support their team in the 3rd Division away game against Jahn Regensburg, who were recently relegated from the 2nd Division.
What they saw likely left most of them speechless. The “Lions” lost 0-4—going down without a fight. At halftime, the score was only 0-1, but even then the hosts had already had plenty of chances to build a more comfortable lead. As a result, the Munich team, which was among the favorites for promotion, has now found itself in a relegation battle for the time being.
They are just two points above the first relegation spot, currently occupied by Erzgebirge Aue. It was the second loss in four games under new coach Markus Kauczinski. Two home wins are offset by two away losses. Above all, it was the manner of the defeat that angered the coach, who didn’t mince words when speaking to “MagentaSport.”
He spoke plainly: “I’m stunned. It was a total collapse from start to finish. We deserved to lose by that margin. Jahn Regensburg was superior in every respect. It starts with every single player. This was supposed to be a battle of attrition. But we didn’t rise to the challenge and always came up short. I can’t quite process this yet.”
If the team does end up fighting relegation, one currently doesn’t believe this squad—which was built for the promotion battle—possesses the qualities that will then be necessary.
The opponent showed how it’s done. Regensburg provided a free masterclass on how to work one’s way out of a crisis.
Munier Raychouni, assistant coach of Jahn Regensburg, who filled in for the suspended Michael Wimmer, summed it up: “We dominated the game. Unfortunately, we only had one goal before halftime. But the game can turn around after the break. We managed to break free from that and ignite everything. That’s our job as a coaching staff!”
