It’s not just in terms of players that 1. FC Köln is gearing up for the 2nd division. The coaching team around Gerhard Struber is now also in place.
Support for Gerhard Struber: 1. FC Köln have announced that Bernd Eibler and Thomas Hickersberger will assist the head coach as assistant coach duo. Max Weuthen, Tillmann Bockhorst and Leif Frach will continue to act as athletics and rehab coaches, Hannes Dold and Denis Huckestein as analysts.
And then there is the matter of the goalkeeping coach: Peter Greiber will train Cologne’s goalkeepers in future. His contract with VfL Bochum was recently terminated after 19 years. There was speculation about a return to Cologne, but now it’s official.
“What I have experienced with VfL over the past 20 years has been very special. When I started, VfL played in the 2nd Bundesliga. Now the club is entering its fourth Bundesliga year in a row. The emotional rescue in the relegation matches this year was the icing on the cake,” said Greiber on his departure from Bochum.
He continued: “I would also like to thank Felix Wenderoth, with whom I worked closely. Felix supported me very well in his work as goalkeeping coach and goalkeeping coordinator at the Talentwerk. I’m leaving with a totally positive feeling. It’s also the best possible time to do something new again.”
Greiber was born in Mainz on October 28, 1968. He started working as a goalkeeping coach at 1. FC Köln in 1995 while studying at the Cologne Sports University and worked in the youth section of 1. FC Köln until 2005. Since then, he has been under contract with VfL Bochum, where he was most recently responsible for the professional goalkeeping team. Now it’s time to return to the cathedral city.
“When putting together our new coaching team, it was important for us to find the right balance between professional expertise, strong characters and seniority. We are therefore delighted that we have been able to recruit Thomas Hickersberger, Bernd Eibler and Peter Greiber for FC. All three come with the conviction and ambition that, together with the entire coaching team, they can raise the performance potential of our team through systematic communication of our playing idea and clear leadership,” said Cologne’s managing director Christian Keller.
