Comeback win against Ahlen despite aluminum pitch and penalty miss

Wuppertaler SV won 2:1 (0:0) against basement dwellers Rot Weiss Ahlen on matchday 32. Ahlen can no longer avoid the drop to the top division.

On matchday 32 of the Regionalliga West, Wuppertaler SV won 2:1 (0:0) against Rot Weiss Ahlen, who are bottom of the table. Derrick Kyere (49′) put the Wersestadt side ahead, but Marco Terrazzino (83′) and Damjan Marceta (85′) secured a home win for Wuppertal.

Wuppertal thus remain in third place in the table and can overtake 1. FC Bocholt with a win in the catch-up match against Fortuna Düsseldorf II. Ahlen remain bottom of the table and are certain to be relegated after this defeat.

The home side’s clear dominance was already evident in the early stages of the match. Although Ahlen had a good opportunity in the person of Pedro Cejas after five minutes, this remained a rarity. WSV right-back Philipp Hanke failed to hit the inside of the post after a solo run (8′) and shortly before that, RWA keeper Luis Ackermann had saved a shot from Phil Beckhoff.

Ackermann also made several saves in the ensuing spell, including another against Beckhoff (21), while top scorer Charlison Benschop was also unable to beat the young keeper (27). The Bergisch side also had a huge aluminium miss: first a header from Marco Terrazzino hit the woodwork (29′), then Beckhoff hit the aluminum with his head for the third time (41′). The Ahlen team could thank the soccer gods that it was 0-0 at the break.

In the second half, things got even worse for Ersan Parlatan’s side: After an RWA corner, Derrick Kyere dinked the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal from outside the sixteen (49′) – it was a topsy-turvy world in Wuppertal. WSV reacted furiously and had a great chance to equalize in the 62nd minute. After an attack down the right, a Wuppertal player fell in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. However, Benschop shot the penalty over the goal.

It looked as if the Bergisch side would not be able to recover from this setback. Until WSV were awarded another penalty after a foul on Hanke. This time, Terrazzino took responsibility and converted safely into the bottom left corner (83′). Wuppertal turned the game around just two minutes later when Damjan Marceta scored to make it 2-1. A well-deserved three-pointer for WSV.

Next Tuesday (May 7, 7 p.m.), Wuppertal will play a catch-up match against Fortuna Düsseldorf II before a clash for second place against 1. FC Bocholt on the penultimate matchday (May 11, 2 p.m.). Rot Weiss Ahlen will then play their last home game of the season against Borussia Mönchengladbach’s second team
