For many DAZN subscribers, the costs have doubled. Now they can possibly hope for a refund. Consumer advocates have announced a class action lawsuit and are looking for those affected.
The Federal Association of Consumer Organisations (vzbv) wants to take action with a class action lawsuit against the sharply increased subscription costs of the internet sports broadcaster DAZN. “The hefty price increases” at DAZN are not only annoying for sports fans, but also not legally permissible without consent, a vzbv statement said on Tuesday.
The price increase clause in the contracts of existing customers is “intransparent” and “therefore invalid”, according to the association. Now the vzbv is looking for DAZN customers who are affected by the price increase during an ongoing contract. Through the lawsuit, those affected should get their money back.
Upon request, the streaming service DAZN stated that it had already received a letter from the vzbv in May last year. “We took the points raised in it very seriously and immediately sought legal advice from a leading international law firm.” The issues were complex and technical, he said. “DAZN remains convinced that its T&Cs are in line with applicable law.”
The streaming service, which has been operating in Germany since 2016, has raised prices several times, most recently for existing customers in the summer of 2022. The cost of a monthly subscription had virtually doubled, rising from €14.99 to €29.99. The cheapest DAZN subscription costs 24.99 euros per month with a contract for one year. The streaming service offers, among other things, matches from the Bundesliga as well as almost all Champions League games.
