The last minutes of Tunisia’s match against France at the World Cup in Qatar were absolutely crazy. After the French, who had already qualified for the round of 16 before the match, had disappointed in the first half, Antoine Griezmann scored an equaliser in the very last minute to make it 1-1. The French reporters, the journalists and photographers on site, almost everyone thought the match was over – and the Bleus had somehow saved their honour and won for the 10th time in a row…
But the coach of the Tunisian team appealed the French goal. The referee consulted the video evidence – and the goal did not count.
Tunisian captain Wahbi Khazri, who plays for Montpellier in France, had scored the winning goal in the 58th minute – for the team led by Cologne’s Ellyes Skhiri.
Australia celebrate their entry into the last 16 – Denmark are out
At the same time, Denmark, a team previously rated as very strong, lost to Australia in front of 41 232 spectators in Al-Wakra. Apart from their defensible but unsuccessful performance in the 2-1 loss to France, coach Kasper Hjulmand’s team lacked everything in this World Cup that had made them so successful in the previous two years.
“I am very frustrated. The team played very well for a year and a half, now I am sad and disappointed,” said Hjulmand. And defender Joachim Andersen admitted: “It just wasn’t good enough. It’s a fiasco.”
Germany will play Costa Rica in Qatar on Sunday – under the direction of French referee Stéphanie Frappart.
