Crazy streak continues against Viktoria Cologne – Saarbrücken still winless

Viktoria Cologne celebrated a victory against 1. FC Saarbrücken in the 3rd division. The visitors’ crazy streak continues.

Viktoria Cologne defeated 1. FC Saarbrücken 2-0 (2-0) at home in the opening match of the 21st matchday of the 3rd league. This was a good response to the surprising defeat against bottom-of-the-table 1. FC Schweinfurt last week. The situation is completely different for the Saarland team: they have been waiting for three points for an incredible 14 league games. Marian Wilhelm’s team got off to a perfect start and crowned their good start to the game with an early 1-0 lead (5th minute). After a good attack down the left, Meiko Sponsel found himself completely unmarked in the penalty area and slotted home his first third division goal.

Cologne kept up the pressure. After a free kick from Leonhard Münst, the ball landed at Tim Kloss, who was denied by the keeper. Verthomy Boboy scored the rebound to make it 2-0 – a deserved lead that reflected the run of play.

Saarbrücken responded with a double substitution after half an hour. Sebastian Vasiliadis and Elijah Krahn came on for Kasim Rabihic and Manuel Zeitz (32′). Unlike Kai Brünker, who had to be replaced by Patrick Schmidt ten minutes later, these substitutions were apparently not due to injury.

The visitors showed a marked improvement after the break and were more aggressive in attack, but failed to make the most of their chances. Tim Civeja had the best chance to make it 1-2, but after good work from Florian Pick, he was denied by Simon Handle, who cleared the ball off the line (63′). Further chances followed, but without success: Rodney Elongo-Yombo even hit the post (85′). The score remained 2-0. Viktoria Köln consolidated their place in mid-table with the win. Next week (January 31, 2 p.m.), they continue with a home game against SV Waldhof Mannheim. 1. FC Saarbrücken, on the other hand, are stuck in a relegation battle and face VfL Osnabrück at the same time.
