Third division football team Borussia Dortmund II fought their way to a 1-1 draw in Wiesbaden. A curious scene put Borussia behind.
It was only on Monday evening that Borussia Dortmund’s U23s kicked off the new third division season with an away game at SV Wehen Wiesbaden. The BVB reserve was only the outsider at the ambitious Hessians, the upheaval in the summer was too great. In addition to several key players, Dortmund also lost its successful coach Enrico Maaßen, who moved to Bundesliga side FC Augsburg. His successor, Christian Preußer, could be satisfied with his first appearance – the match ended in a fair 1:1 (0:0).
In the first half, an even game developed. At the beginning of the match, the home side dominated the game, but BVB had the two biggest opportunities during the first half. Bradley Fink missed a double chance (34th) and only eight turns of the clock later Lion Semic failed from close range to Wehen keeper Florian Stritzel.
Huge mistake by Unbehaun
After the second half, the scene of the evening took place. This much in advance – it was a very curious action, which will probably make it into every season review. Dortmund goalkeeper Luca Unbehaun caught a long ball unchallenged and put the ball in front of him in the penalty area. He probably thought that his team had been awarded a free kick. But that was not the case. The ball landed on the edge of the sixteen directly at the feet of Wehen striker Gustaf Nilsson. Nilsson took advantage of the moment and flicked the ball over the right post into the net – an incredible scene!
But Preußer’s team showed the right reaction. 13 minutes before the end of the game, substitute Rodney Elongo-Yombo equalised after an assist from Michael Eberwein. Elongo-Yombo was only signed on Monday and promptly justified his signing with his first goal of the season. Afterwards, Wiesbaden pressed for victory, but Dortmund saved the draw with a lot of passion.
Both teams are off next week. The first main round of the DFB Cup is coming up and both Borussia’s second team and Wehen Wiesbaden are not in the competition.
