Rot-Weiss Essen suffered four major setbacks with the departures of Götze, Harenbrock, Obuz and captain Sapina. Now Christoph Dabrowski spoke about the captain’s departure.
This summer transfer phase has already cost Rot-Weiss Essen in particular a number of key players. Felix Götze, the captain of the defense, left Hafenstraße for the 2nd Bundesliga to SC Paderborn. Marvin Obuz is returning to 1. FC Köln after his loan, where a new opportunity awaits the creative player following the cathedral city club’s relegation.
Cedric Harenbrock joined 2nd division relegated Hansa Rostock and will play for the “Hansa-Kogge” in the future. The departure of captain Vinko Sapina, who decided to move to SG Dynamo Dresden, came as a bit of a surprise.
At the start of the pre-season preparations, RWE head coach Christoph Dabrowski spoke about the four departures: “We have lost four key players. I would have liked to keep them. But it just wasn’t possible. That’s part and parcel of our current phase. Unfortunately, we don’t have the 2nd Bundesliga here or the salary levels of others in the 3rd division.”
Sapina was just such a case. “When an offer like that comes in, you have to put your heads together and weigh up the pros and cons. Taking all opinions and influences into account, we then made the decision we did – based solely on the economic viability of an older player,” said Dabrowski.

At the end of the day, the economic possibilities of a club like Dynamo Dresden are simply too great. The 45-year-old also shows understanding for his former captain’s decision: “I also see the player who signs a three-year contract and probably earns twice as much. It’s always a matter of weighing up all the factors. “
It remains to be seen how Rot-Weiss Essen can close the gap left by the departures. The fact is that the squad planning is far from over. “It’s our duty to do something else and bring in quality. Then we have to find a new team again and stabilize it,” explains the Hafenstrasse manager.
