Darmstadt 98 moved to the top of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga on Saturday. The Lilien won 2-1 (0-1) at Karlsruher SC thanks to a late goal from Phillip Tietz and moved past Hamburger SV, who had lost the derby at FC St. Pauli 0-3 on Friday.
1. FC Nuremberg also managed their first win under new coach Markus Weinzierl with a 1-0 (0-0) at Fortuna Düsseldorf, while Eintracht Braunschweig are unbeaten in six games after a 2-0 (0-0) at 1. FC Magdeburg.
Darmstadt’s streak even lasts five games longer. Fabian Schleusener’s (19th) header for KSC was countered by Patric Pfeiffer (49th) with the equaliser, Tietz (88th) made the victory perfect. Darmstadt only lost on the first matchday in Regensburg.
The visitors started confidently, but after the opening goal, Karlsruhe came up trumps with no-frills attacking play. The 1:0 had loosened the tension, Darmstadt had to make great efforts to regain control of the game.
It was only a standard situation that led to the equaliser, Tobias Kempe serving Pfeiffer from a corner kick, who was successful with his header. It was the seventh time this season that Kempe had set up an SVD goal. Another goal by Pfeiffer (62nd) was disallowed due to handball after video evidence.
Nuremberg’s victory left them 16th in the table, while Fortuna again struggled in vain to catch up with the promotion places. The club defended consistently and took on fierce duels, so the hosts had problems to play an orderly game. Shortly after the break, Kwadwo Duah (47th) was the beneficiary of a Düsseldorf defensive error when he scored the winning goal.
In Magdeburg, Amara Conde scored an own goal (51.) to give the visitors from Braunschweig the lead, and Bryan Henning (90.+5) put everything beyond doubt. FCM (10 points) slipped to 17th and penultimate place in the table.
Both teams were mainly concerned with saving goals, so it was an encounter without many chances. After two defeats in the last three games, FCM found it difficult to set the tone going forward.
