Wuppertaler SV recently had to cancel its home match against Fortuna Düsseldorf II. The replay date has now been set.
On Saturday, April 20, 2 p.m., Wuppertaler SV was supposed to host the second team of Fortuna Düsseldorf. Actually. Because due to a wave of illness, the game had to be canceled a few hours before kick-off.
“Due to a wave of infection with a highly infectious gastrointestinal virus, it was unavoidable to cancel the match in order to protect the health and safety of all involved. The decision was made in consultation with Fortuna Düsseldorf in order to protect the players and officials of both teams and their families,” the club explained in its statement.
The rescheduled date has now been set. On Tuesday, May 7, 7 p.m., both teams will face each other at the Stadion am Zoo. The match was originally of particular interest because WSV could at least theoretically still catch league leaders Alemannia Aachen on their way to the third division.
Last matchday, Aachen could have been promoted if they had won and Wuppertal had dropped a point. Although Aachen won 1:0 at SC Paderborn II, promotion was postponed due to WSV’s match being called off. This caused quite a stir on social media
The cancellation of the match at the Stadion am Zoo caused a stir among some “fans”, who confronted the club from the Bergisches Land region with at least some unconventional theories, some of which went way over the top.
An intended action against the Aachen celebrations was suspected, the WSV players were harshly insulted and terms such as “spoilsport” or “ridiculous” were still harmless. The negative highlight was news in which serious illnesses or even death were wished for those affected. Wuppertaler SV restricted the comment function on the post about the cancellation after a short time.
Meanwhile, a large proportion of Aachen’s supporters vehemently distanced themselves from the offensive statements and sent get-well wishes to the Bergisches Land.
Aachen can now clinch promotion at home against 1. FC Bocholt on Saturday, April 27, 2 p.m., under their own steam. Should Wuppertal not win against Fortuna Köln the day before, Aachen’s return to the third division would already be certain before their own match. The match against Fortuna Düsseldorf II would then no longer carry any weight for Aachen
