SpVgg Fürth just can’t seem to find its footing in the 2nd division. After another debacle against Karlsruher SC, there was a clear announcement from the coach.
SpVgg Fürth is sticking with coach Thomas Kleine for the time being, even after another heavy defeat in the 2nd Bundesliga. This was announced by sporting director Stephan Fürstner after the 1-4 defeat against Karlsruher SC on Friday evening, with a view to the upcoming DFB Cup match against league rivals 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
“The coaching team will be on the sidelines on Wednesday. And then we’ll try to do better,” Fürstner announced in an ARD interview.
“I see the coaching team working with the team every day,” said 38-year-old Fürstner, explaining his continued confidence in Kleine (47). “It’s a different competition, maybe that will do us good,” said Fürstner with a view to the cup. As a knockout game, the second round match in the cup has a “final character.”
After the international break, Fürth suffered their second heavy defeat in a matter of days. Fürstner described the performance in their own stadium as “very disappointing.” “We had set ourselves incredibly high goals, especially after the 0-6 defeat in Elversberg,” said the former professional: “We’re getting knocked back again at the start. Then your head gets in the way, that’s only human.“
The biggest problem at the moment is the weak defense. With 28 goals conceded – 2.8 per game – the Franconians are the whipping boys of the 2nd division. ”We’re conceding far too many goals. How many do we have to score to win games?“ said Fürstner: ” We need to improve quickly.“
So Kleine had no choice but to congratulate the opponents once again. ”Congratulations to KSC. When you go into this game and focus on being strong defensively, and then find yourself 0-1 down after three minutes, that’s not what you want, and you could see that in the team. We had big plans. The team still managed to control the game, though, and could have equalized. The 2-0 goal turned the game on its head again. The mood at halftime was, of course, that the guys were very disappointed, but we still had faith,” he said.
He continued: “That’s how we came out, we were confident and that’s how we played at the start of the second half. With a huge chance to make it 1-2. KSC took away our flow with cleverness and fouls, which we didn’t do in those phases. We have to draw fouls, be smarter and defend those goals better. You have a huge chance to make it 2-3 and then you concede 1-4 in return. The fact that we concede goals far too easily is simply a fact that makes it so difficult to score points. We have now put ourselves in this difficult situation with these two poor results, but we also know that we can be better and turn things around. Accordingly, we are going into this week very offensively. In soccer, it’s part of the game to fight for victories, and we’re looking forward to fighting our way into another competition on Wednesday. When you see that the fans are unhappy, it’s also up to us to take that on board and engage in dialogue. The message was very clear that we will tackle this together on Wednesday; they made that very clear to us.”
On Wednesday, October 29, at 6 p.m., Fürth will host 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
