Defeat against Nuremberg – S04 remain winless in fifth test match

FC Schalke 04 has conceded a test match defeat in the training camp in Belek. The Königsblauen lost to 1. FC Nürnberg with 0:1.

When Schalke 04 meets 1. FC Nürnberg, there is traditionally no lack of good atmosphere in the stands. The two clubs have been friends for many years. For this reason alone, the test match between the two traditional clubs in Belek on Tuesday afternoon was well attended. Despite continuous rain in Turkey, there was a good atmosphere in the Titanic Deluxe Football Center – even if not much happened on the pitch until the final phase. The 1:0 winning goal for 1. FC Nürnberg only came in the final phase via a penalty (79th). Erik Shuranov kept his nerve from the spot

For the Schalkers, a small test match curse continues. The fifth match of the winter preparation was also not won. The poor record: three draws, two defeats.

The Gelsenkirchen team took the match one day before the return flight to Germany very seriously – this was already shown by the line-up of coach Thomas Reis. With the exception of goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann, the team that started against FCN could well be in this formation for the Bundesliga opener against Eintracht Frankfurt (21 January). Newcomer Jere Uronen, who was signed from Stade Brest only a few days ago, also made his first appearance in the S04 jersey.

And as a replacement for the injured Thomas Ouwejan, the 28-year-old Finn did well. In the first half, he paved the way for Schalk’s biggest chance. But after Uronen’s cross, striker Simon Terodde missed from close range (11th). The attacker then even missed another good opportunity with his head (36th).

The fact that Schalke went into the break without conceding a goal was also thanks to their goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann. The 34-year-old reacted brilliantly twice – once against Kwadwo Duah (22nd), once against Lino Tempelmann (27th).

As in the test against Zurich on Saturday (2:2), Reis changed the majority of his team at half-time – eight substitutions were made against FCN. The second newcomer, Niklas Tauer, also made his debut.

However, the many changes did not help the Schalkers’ game, because the team struggled in the second half. The second-division team from Nuremberg had the better chances – they were lucky to miss a triple chance (61st). It was also annoying for Schalke that Florent Mollet had to be substituted with knee problems.

Schalke did not have any offensive actions worth mentioning after the break. FCN was different: In the final phase, substitute S04 centre-back Ibrahima Cissé was too clumsy in a duel and fouled Jermain Nischalke in the penalty area – a penalty kick was awarded. From eleven metres, Nuremberg’s Erik Shuranov kept his nerve and scored the winner.
