In the semi-final, the defending champions met Blau-Weiß Langenberg. The SSVg had everything under control and quickly took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Aliosman Aydin and Leon Miguel Zahran. Then a shot from Lorenz Luke Fehrig slipped through the fingers of Velbert keeper and brought excitement back into the game. It was only in the last minute of the game that Lirik Krasniqi made everything clear with his 3-1.
“Langenberg stood deep, like a wall,” said SSVg coach Rekkas Panagiotis afterwards. ‘But we stayed calm and got the reward.’ Indeed, Langenberg mostly stood with all four field players deep in their own half and left the ball to the SSVg. A tactic that was all the more effective given that handball goals were played.
In the second semi-final, TVD Velbert met AS Stella Azzurra and went behind early on (5th minute). Although TVD then dominated, it conceded a bitter 0:2 in the second 15 minutes, with the ball ending up in the net twice after deflections from free kicks. TVD itself remained ineffective in attack for a long time, but managed to get back into the game with a powerful shot from the halfway line. But the excitement only lasted a moment, because in an almost direct counterattack, Leon Frenkel restored the old distance to the 3-1 final score.
In the placement games, SC Velbert secured fifth place. A 0-1 deficit at half-time was turned into a 2-1 victory against Türkgücü. The match for third place was a rather one-sided affair, but the result did not reflect this. TVD Velbert was highly superior, but only won the game 1-0 through Athanasios Xiros, who scored the golden goal with the half-time siren.
One-sided story in the final
In the final, SSVg Velbert showed who was boss on the pitch from the outset. The team of coach Rekkas Panagiotis won 3-0, with the score already 2-0 at half-time. Lirik Krasniqi and Aliosman Aydin after a textbook counterattack scored the goals in the first half, with Nico Fuchs getting the final score on the board.
“We scored a lot of goals, we are the top scorer – it was really perfect.”
Rekkas Panagiotis
Rekkas Panagiotis was overjoyed with the victory in the city championships: “I think we played excellently from the first match day. We are having a great season, I am very happy with my team.” Krasniqi also finished as the top scorer.
“It’s amazing how quickly our team has grown together,” Panagiotis continued. “They’re young, dynamic guys who are keen. We’ve scored a lot of goals and have the top scorer – it’s been perfect.”
