SC Verl made it exciting, but then moved into the quarterfinals of the Westfalenpokal.
In the quarterfinals of the Westfalen Cup, an illustrious round awaits the draw. SC Verl also joined them on Wednesday evening.
The third-division club had more trouble than it would have liked. SC Wiedenbrück, the twelfth-placed team in the Regionalliga West, went into a penalty shootout in front of more than 1,000 spectators at Wiedenbrück’s Jahnstadion.
After 90 minutes, the score was 1-1, with summer signing Lars Lokotsch giving the favorites the lead before the break. After the change, Maik Amedick equalized for the home side after a corner. Both teams still had their chances to decide the match earlier.
But the score remained 1-1 after 90 minutes – even after extra time. In the penalty shootout, SCV goalkeeper Tom Müller was the man of the evening. After Mael Corboz scored for Verl, Amedick only hit the crossbar. Subsequently, three Verler and two Wiedenbrücker scored. Then Müller was on the spot against Francesco Di Pierro and Verl was in the quarterfinals.
The final participant will be determined on October 24, when Preußen Münster meets SV Vestia Disteln. In the league, SC Verl continues on Sunday (October 22, 1:30 p.m.) at SV Sandhausen. SC Wiedenbrück will face 1. FC Köln’s U21s in the Regionalliga West on Saturday (October 21, 2 p.m.).
