The FC Schalke 04 U19s turn around a half-time deficit against Borussia Dortmund and can still hope to win the Westphalia Cup.
Shortly after reaching the final of the German A-Junior Championship, Borussia Dortmund’s U19s have already squandered another chance at a title. In the rescheduled quarter-final of the U19 Westphalia Cup, BVB lost 3:1 (1:0) to arch-rivals Schalke 04.
Things still looked good for Mike Tullberg’s team after 45 minutes. Thanks to a goal from Taycan Macid Etcibasi after just over half an hour, BVB were leading and on course for the semi-finals. This picture changed after the BVB coach made four changes at half-time.
Shortly after the restart, Taylan Bulut equalized with a header from a Schalke corner (51′). It remained tense until the final stages, with BVB having the better chances. However, Charles Herrmann (60′) and Rafael Lubach (69′) failed to score against the aluminum.
As so often happens when you don’t score goals up front, S04 decided the game with a double strike. Firstly, Schalke coach Norbert Elgert proved to have a golden touch.
He brought on Nedzhib Hadzha (72′) – and he thanked him just under ten minutes later with his 2:1 (81′). Shortly afterwards, the game was decided: The visitors countered, and BVB defender Tyler Meiser tried to defuse a cross with a sliding tackle, but scored into his own net (86′).
Schalke are now through to the semi-finals, where they will face FC Iserlohn next Tuesday (May 28, 6.30 pm). A potential opponent in the final has also been decided since the first semi-final on April 17: SC Paderborn beat SV Rödinghausen 5:0 and have been waiting for their rival for the trophy ever since.
This is how they played:
