Despite horror crash: First F1 points for Mick Schumacher at Silverstone.

A horror crash overshadowed the Silverstone Formula 1 Grand Prix: five drivers were involved in the accident at the start of the race. The Alfa Romeo of the Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou was first thrown off the track and then again three metres high through the air. Not only the spectators at Silverstone, but also the millions of viewers in front of the TV screens were worried about the 23-year-old.

A video shows the race car coming to a stop just before the last fence – very close to the grandstands.

A little later came the all-clear. On Twitter, Guanyu Zhou then wrote: “I’m OK. My halo saved me today. Thanks for all your lovely messages!” Max Verstappen also said that without the cockpit protection, things would be very bad for his colleague.

For a long time it looked as if Charles Leclerc would win for Ferrari at Silverstone, but after a safety car period in which the Monegasque was the only one not to change tyres, team-mate Carlos Sainz took the lead. The 27-year-old Spaniard and son of the world rally champion of the same name then celebrated his first victory in Formula 1, with Lewis Hamilton second in the Silver Arrow and Sergio Perez third in the Red Bull. And Charles Leclerc finished in fourth place.

On Twitter, Carlos Sainz Jr. rejoices over a spectacular victory and looks forward to next weekend’s race in Spielberg, Austria.

In the end Mick Schumacher finished in 8th place in Silverstone and got his very first points in Formula 1. In the Haas racing team the boss had recently been heavily critical of the 23-year-old German.

His rival Sebastian Vettel, on the other hand, backed him up. The Aston Martin driver said he “screamed inside: ‘Go Mick, go Mick!'” when he saw that Mick Schumacher was ahead of him. Vettel finished ninth at Silverstone.

On Twitter, Mick Schumacher celebrated Sebastian Vettel’s birthday alongside his own points, the Heppenheimer is now 35 years old.
