Matthias Sammer thinks it would make sense to reintroduce a sports director at the DFB. He names Lothar Matthäus as a possible candidate.
Matthias Sammer would like to see a sports director at the German Football Association (DFB) again. “A sports system without a superior sporting director – that is the image of the German Football Association. I have made enough mistakes in my life. But the mistake of abolishing this position is something you have to come up with first,” Sammer said on MagentaTV.
The 1996 European champion himself worked in this position at the DFB between 2006 and 2012. The 55-year-old now hopes to see the post reinstated.
“The fact is that this person is also to some extent responsible for the big guidelines,” said Sammer: “A sports director sets the big lines – and in my opinion they need a corrective every two years to turn the small adjusting screws in the right direction.” Sammer brought up record international Lothar Matthäus as a possible candidate.
