In the summer, Keke Topp returned from FC Schalke 04 to SV Werder Bremen. The striker hadn’t planned to do so.
Actually, Keke Topp had fully expected to be chasing goals with FC Schalke 04 in the 2nd Bundesliga this season. Instead, the 20-year-old can now prove himself at a higher level, for SV Werder Bremen.
According to his own statements, the return to the Weser, where the striker completed his training, was not planned. Quite the opposite. “I didn’t want to move at all. Moving was never actually an option for me in the summer,” he said on the “Sky” show “My Story”.
He had just made his breakthrough with the Royal Blues, scoring five goals in 25 second division matches and assisting two more. “But then the contract offer came from Schalke, which really made me feel a bit ripped off,” said Topp.
“I was told that I should be the new future in the attack, that they have big plans for me, that they want to earn a lot of money with me at some point. And when they then presented me with a bad contract offer – I felt like I was being ripped off,” explained Topp.
But that’s not all: “Then they took away my closest confidants and so many players or people. Otherwise I would probably still be a Schalke player.”
Instead, after his debut under Thomas Reis in 2023, he is now gaining more Bundesliga experience earlier than expected. He has played six times for Bremen so far, once from the start. “I’m just happy to be back and to wear the Werder jersey,” says Topp.
