“Didn’t want to switch” – That’s why Topp felt ‘cheated’

In the summer, Keke Topp returned from FC Schalke 04 to SV Werder Bremen. The striker hadn’t planned on doing so.

Keke Topp had actually been counting on scoring goals for FC Schalke 04 in the 2nd Bundesliga this season. Instead, the 20-year-old now has the opportunity to prove himself one level higher, for SV Werder Bremen.

According to his own statements, a return to the Weser, where the striker completed his training, was not planned. On the contrary. “I didn’t want to switch at all. For me, it was never really an option to move in the summer,” he said on the Sky program ‘Meine Geschichte’ (My Story).

He had just made his breakthrough with the Royal Blues, scoring five goals and setting up two more in 25 second division games. ‘But then came the contract offer from Schalke, where I felt a bit taken for a ride,’ said Topp.

“I was told that I was supposed to be the new future in attack, that they had big plans for me, that they wanted to earn a lot of money with me at some point. And then when they presented me with a bad contract offer, I felt like I was being taken for a ride,” Topp explained.

But that wasn’t all: ”Then they took my closest confidants and so many players or people away from me. Otherwise, I’d probably still be a Schalke player.”

Instead, after making his debut under Thomas Reis in 2023, he is now gaining Bundesliga experience earlier than expected. He has made six appearances for Bremen so far, one of which was from the start. “I’m just happy to be back and wearing the Werder jersey,” said Topp.
