Double digits, three games in extra time, WSV wins at ETB

The second round of the Lower Rhine Cup had it all. A near sensation, a double-digit score, and plenty of drama. Only the big surprise failed to materialize in the end.

In the second round of the Lower Rhine Cup, Oberliga club FC Büderich took the lead on Tuesday. Büderich was the first club to advance to the round of 16 with a 10-2 win at SV Uedesheim. On Wednesday, it was a big day of action. Twenty-six of the 32 teams were in action, with only the Scherpenberg vs. Ratingen and RWO vs. RWE matches to be played later. SpVg Schonnebeck confidently accomplished its task against Landesliga club ASV Süchteln. The Oberliga club quickly took a 4-0 lead, which remained unchanged until the final whistle, allowing Schonnebeck to conserve energy for league play.

Things were a little tighter at the Uhlenkrug, where regional league team Wuppertaler SV quickly took a 3-1 lead against Oberliga team ETB SW Essen. But shortly before half-time, Toshiaki Miyamoto received a yellow card and then a yellow-red card within a minute. Despite being a man down, WSV managed to hold on to their lead.

After initial problems at SC Velbert, 1. FC Bocholt won 2-0. Nicolas Hirschberger scored both goals for the regional league team.

KFC Uerdingen also secured their place in the round of 16. KFC took an early 2-0 lead against SV Biemenhorst, and the final score was 3-0. That’s how MSV had imagined their game in Nettetal would go, but the 3rd division leaders embarrassed themselves with a weak performance against the regional league team. It was only in extra time that coach Dietmar Hirsch’s team prevailed.

The matches in Homberg and Hamborn also went into extra time. In the end, the favorites prevailed. VfB Homberg defeated Baumberg 4-2 and SSVg Velbert won 2-1 at Rheinland Hamborn.
