DSC Wanne-Eickel is in the midst of preparations for the upcoming season in the Westfalenliga 2. Head coach Sebastian Westerhoff’s team finished fifth in the table last season with 54 points. For the opening match, SC Obersprockhövel will be DSC’s guests on 13 August (3 pm).
The team from Wanne-Eickel already did well at this year’s Cranger Kirmes Cup in Herne. At the 22nd edition of the tradition-steeped competition, DSC reached the final. Although coach Westerhoff’s team was beaten 3-1 by Lüner SV in the final, the DSC coach is nevertheless satisfied with the state of preparation so far.
“On the whole, I am completely satisfied that we came second in this tournament. Of course we would have liked to win, but Lünen simply caught us on the wrong foot. I don’t think we played a bad game overall and we could have at least drawn. Nevertheless, I am satisfied with our performance in this tournament. Physical fitness is the most important thing we will take with us from this competition into the new season,” the coach summed up on the sidelines of the final match.
“First the boys have to come down “
Although the Westfalenliga 2 season kicks off in just under two weeks, Westerhoff is putting the brakes on shortly after the competition in Herne and wants to give the players who are already fit for action the best possible rest until the start of the season. According to the coach, they don’t want to provoke any unnecessary injuries.
“The physical fitness of my team is the most important thing and will be the be-all and end-all in the upcoming training sessions. Nevertheless, my boys have to come down first after this exhausting tournament. Our opponents in the final, Lünen, were able to change ten players compared to the semi-final. We, on the other hand, did not have this possibility. In the meantime, I had one player on the bench and even brought in a goalkeeper afterwards,” explained Westerhoff.
Westerhoff continued: “That’s quite a difference and that’s why some of the players with a lot of playing time will have to recharge their batteries in the coming week,” explained Westerhoff with regard to his team’s state of preparation.
