Duel between Ouwejan and Murkin – Baumgartl a possible Kaminski replacement

FC Schalke 04 are aiming to get their first win of 2024 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. This is the current situation regarding the Schalke squad.

FC Schalke 04 are facing their first away game. And the trip to 1. FC Kaiserslautern is a real traditional duel for the miners. It could also be a game that points the way forward in the relegation battle.

“All the players are fit, there are no new injuries. That means we have a large group to work with,” said Karel Geraerts at Schalke’s press conference ahead of the game at the Betzenberg.

With Marcin Kaminski and Ron Schallenberg, two players will be missing due to suspension. “I will make my final decision after tomorrow’s training session. But Timo Baumgartl is a player who has been waiting a long time for his chance,” Geraerts revealed about the vacant position in central defense. “I trust that he will present himself well when he gets his chance. I think Timo would be a logical replacement, but I’ll wait for the last training session.”

New signing Darko Churlinov will also likely be in the squad. The Schalke head coach says of the returnee, who came to Gelsenkirchen from Burnley: “It’s good to have him here. I had a long conversation with Vincent Kompany, who is the manager at Burnley, and also had a good impression after talking to Darko. He is very motivated and really wants to help Schalke. So far, he has trained twice, but I’ll wait and see tomorrow. But if a player is ready in his head, his body will follow.”

Ouwejan or Murkin? ”Happy to be able to make this kind of decision”

Geraerts has the “most difficult decision” to make on the left wing between Thomas Ouwejan and Derry Murkin. Murkin was in the starting lineup before the winter break, but after Murkin was suspended for the 2-0 loss to Hamburger SV, Ouwejan started and impressed with two shots hitting the post. “I have to decide on Friday, but I’m happy to be able to make this kind of decision.”

The Belgian is also spoilt for choice in attack, as he explains: “Bryan Lasme is a week further along in his process. It’s important to see that someone is ready when he comes off the bench. I also liked Keke Topp against Hamburg. And Simon Terodde is my captain and an important player I can always rely on.” Niklas Castelle and Yusuf Kabadyi also received special praise from the head coach.

Blendi Idrizi is ill, “so we’ll have to wait and see how he is tomorrow,” says Geraerts.
