Late goal: Heidenheim beats Darmstadt in top match
Leaders Darmstadt 98 have lost ground in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Torsten Lieberknecht’s team lost the top match of the 23rd matchday 0:1 (0:0) at chaser 1. FC Heidenheim, Hamburger SV closed the gap to one point. Third-placed Heidenheim are now three points behind the Lilies.
Jan-Niklas Beste (89th) scored the redeeming goal for the hosts in front of a crowd of 12,222 on Saturday, handing Darmstadt only their second defeat of the season. Before that, Darmstadt had not lost 21 league games.
Coach Frank Schmidt’s Heidenheim side are now already seven points ahead of SC Paderborn in fourth place. The yellow card against Heidenheim’s Dzenis Burnic (90.+1) had no effect on the final result.
After two minutes, Darmstadt’s top scorer Phillip Tietz fired a warning shot from around 25 metres, but FCH goalkeeper Kevin Müller was on hand. The game was not very attractive at first. The best chance of the first period came from Heidenheim’s Patrick Mainka, who hit the crossbar with a header (21.).
At least shortly after the change of ends, the game became a bit faster and consequently a bit more attractive. Jan Schöppner (52nd) forced Marcel Schuhen to make a brilliant save in the Darmstadt goal. After that, the game flattened out – until Beste made the crowd go wild and ushered in a hot final phase.
