Marvin Schmickler, MSV’s commercial director and authorized signatory, describes it as the “Wedau phenomenon.” And indeed, the figures the club has now presented are impressive.
MSV Duisburg’s numbers for the 2024/25 Regionalliga season were impressive. An 11-point lead, by far the best goal difference.
The Meiderich-based team had a great season and earned a well-deserved promotion to the 3rd League. And the financial results from the 2024/25 season are also impressive. These are revenue figures likely unprecedented in the fourth division.
On the club’s official website, MSV has now released figures for the KGaA. Marvin Schmickler, Commercial Director and Authorized Signatory of MSV, emphasized: “We closed the past fiscal year, ending June 30, 2025, with a profit of approximately 685,000 euros. Total revenue amounted to 15.9 million euros, of which 13.2 million euros came from sales revenue.“
A Regionalliga profit that other clubs do not have available for their first team. This clearly demonstrates the impact the ”Zebras” made during their single season in the Regionalliga—a division where there is no TV revenue.
That’s why Schmickler expressed his deep gratitude. “Our greatest thanks go to all our fans, partners, and the city of Duisburg: with their support, regardless of the league, we steered the club through truly difficult waters and stabilized MSV not only on the field but also financially on the path back to the 3rd League.”
And now Duisburg is fully in the thick of things in the 3rd League as well. Ahead of the final matchday of 2025, MSV sits in second place; a run to the title is a very realistic scenario.
Schmickler is impressed by the club’s current phase. “There’s no more fitting description than the ‘Wedau madness.’ Strong season ticket sales early in the season ensured financial stability and predictability. With our current sponsorship revenue, we rank in the top 3 in the league. Demand at the ZebraShop remains strong, and sales figures have been rising steadily since the store’s reopening in 2024. All of this is simply a reflection of the tremendous support. But despite all the euphoria, we must assess this correctly and, above all, with humility. The fact remains that financing match operations in the 3rd Division poses a major challenge for MSV year after year.”
