Eleven games without a win – former Rot-Weiss Essen coach faces retirement

This defeat could have been one too many: FSV Mainz 05 are still in crisis and their coach is facing the exit.

After the 1:3 defeat at VfB Stuttgart, there could be a change of coach at FSV Mainz 05 in the coming week. Because the air is getting thinner and thinner for Jan Siewert.

After the opening win against RB Leipzig, there was not much more from Mainz under Siewert’s leadership. This was followed by a total of eleven games without a win. In 17th place, the Rheinhessen are already nine points off the safety zone – 15th place in the table. They are also four points behind 16th place in the relegation places. Successful U19 coach Benjamin Hoffmann, once employed by Borussia Dortmund, is already in the starting blocks.

It’s quite possible that Mainz will follow Bo Svensson’s example and fire Siewert. Martin Schmidt, sporting director at Mainz, emphasized after the game: “We’ll sit down together on Monday, analyze and see what the next steps are. It’s clear that we can’t go on playing like this. We need wins. We have to change a few things, you can see that. We’ll discuss this in close consultation with the coach and look for solutions.”

Siewert was coach at Rot-Weiss Essen for 34 games in 2015 before joining VfL Bochum as assistant coach. This was followed by a season with VfL’s U19s before he ended up in the youth section of 1. FSV Mainz 05 via Borussia Dortmund II and Huddersfield Town (England).

When asked by Bild whether he is still the right coach for Mainz 05, the 41-year-old from Essen and Bochum replied combatively: “Basically, we in the coaching team have done everything we can to ensure that the team is successful in every game. It was extremely difficult for us today. The team didn’t give up. I’m sure that this process we’re in will lead to victories. I believe that victory will come against Augsburg.”

It remains to be seen who will be on the Mainz bench on matchday 22 at home against FC Augsburg (Saturday, February 17, 3.30 p.m.)
