England win Women’s European Football Championship 2:1 against Germany

The English women are triumphant. They made history by winning their first major women’s tournament in extra time in a dramatic final match.

The German women’s footballers missed out on their ninth European Championship triumph. The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg lost the final against England at London’s Wembley Stadium on Sunday with 1:2 without captain Alexandra Popp, who was missing due to injury.

Ella Toone (62nd minute) and Chloe Kelly (111th) scored the goals in front of 87,192 spectators to give the hosts their first European Championship title win.

Lina Magull (79th) equalised for the record European champions. Popp, who had scored six goals in the tournament, had to pull out at short notice in the final due to muscular problems.

This was a rousing tournament and the whole of Germany is proud of this team!
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has congratulated the English women’s national football team on winning the European Championship. The SPD politician nevertheless praised the women of the German team for a “world-class performance in a close game”, as he wrote on Twitter on Sunday evening.

Bundestag coach Hansi Flick and DFB director Oliver Bierhoff have praised the German women’s footballers for their performance at the European Championship in England. Flick said: “I am very sorry for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and her entire team that they could not crown their great performances with the title. But after the initial disappointment, they can look back on this tournament with pride.”

The national coach of the men’s team was thrilled “with what passion and at the same time ease, joy of playing and team spirit the team went through this tournament.”
