It can happen that quickly. Three days after an 8:1 win, Spvgg. Erkenschwick suffered a minor setback in the Oberliga Westfalen – but showed morale in the process
Catch-up match in the Oberliga Westfalen. Spvgg. Erkenschwick welcomed relegation candidates Eintracht Rheine.
In the end, Erkenschwick managed to equalize in the 95th minute – both clubs drew 2:2 (1:1). The starting position was clear: Rheine are fighting against relegation to the Westfalenliga, having not lost four of their last five games. And Erkenschwick arrived with the momentum of their 8:1 victory over SG Finnentrop-Bamenohl.
Erkenschwick coach Magnus Niemöller emphasized to RS ahead of the game: “We can’t always expect things to end this high. Nevertheless, we are of course delighted with this outstanding moment.”
And indeed, it quickly became clear that it would be a tough task against Rheine. The basement dwellers even took the lead through Luca Meyer. It took until shortly before the break before Erkenschwick equalized with Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab’s eleventh goal of the season.
After the changeover, it was Mayer again after around an hour who put Rheine ahead with his fourth goal of the season. And the visitors looked set to bring this result home.
However, the hosts’ pressure was rewarded in the 95th minute with their last action. Mike Jordan took heart and scored into the corner.
Meaning in the basement of the table. Rheine, now on 15 points, have not been able to free themselves any further. The gap to SG Wattenscheid (two games less) and FC Brünninghausen in last place is four points – two teams will be relegated at the end of the season.
Erkenschwick continue their campaign on Sunday (February 25) at SpVgg Vreden. Eintracht Rheine will host second-placed SF Lotte at the same time.
