John Verhoek moved from MSV Duisburg to Hansa Rostock in 2019. He no longer has a sporting future there – the striker has been sorted out.
After four years, John Verhoek’s time at Hansa Rostock is apparently coming to an end. The 34-year-old is still under contract at the Ostsee until 2024, but has been sorted out by those responsible and released for talks with other clubs.
This was announced by Rostock at the start of their training camp in Neuruppin (Brandenburg) at the weekend. Like Verhoek, Sebastian Thill and Thomas Meißner were also not allowed to travel.
“After analysing the past season and the realignment in various positions with the resulting competitive situation in the squad, we have informed John, Sebastien and Thomas that we are not planning to work with them in the coming season,” sporting director Kristian Walter is quoted as saying by the club.
And he continues: “Each of them understandably wants to be on the pitch and play as often as possible – that’s why we gave all three of them time off before the training camp to talk to other clubs. Until further notice, of course, they have the opportunity to keep fit with our U23s.”
Dutch attacker Verhoek had worn the jersey of MSV Duisburg before his move to Hansa and scored one goal in 25 Second Division games. He achieved better results in Rostock: on the way to promotion, Verhoek scored twelve times, after which he contributed as many as 17 goals to keep the club in the 2nd Bundesliga. Last season, however, he was unable to repeat this success (two goals in 28 appearances).
It is not yet known where Verhoek, who also played for FSV Frankfurt, FC St. Pauli and 1. FC Heidenheim in Germany, might continue his career.
With Serhat-Semih Güler from Wuppertaler SV, the Rostock team signed the top scorer of the last Regionalliga season this summer. In addition, Lukas Hinterseer and Pascal Breier are two other centre-forwards in coach Alois Schwartz’s squad.
