After the 2:2 draw against FC Schalke 04, HSV coach Steffen Baumgart had to resign. Could a former Schalke coach take over?
Hamburger SV is looking for a new coach. Sky and NDR are now throwing a name into the ring that is making people in the Ruhr area sit up and take notice: David Wagner.
According to NDR, the 53-year-old’s playing philosophy fits HSV. Wagner was most recently at Norwich City. But after missing out on promotion to the Premier League, Norwich parted ways with Wagner. Therefore, he is available in principle.
The UEFA Pro License holder worked for Borussia Dortmund II and FC Schalke 04 for a long time, among others. The “Eurofighter” averaged 1.2 points in 40 games for the Royal Blues – he refereed 164 games for the U23 team of Borussia Dortmund.
If the rumors are true, it would be the first time FC Schalke 04 have seen their former coach since the disastrous 2020/21 relegation season. After a strong first half of the season, Schalke were unable to win under Wagner, going 18 games without a win – a streak that remains a club record for the time being.
Besides David Wagner, Lukas Kwasniok from SC Paderborn, who has been doing a good job at the East Westphalia club for years, and former HSV striker Ruud van Nistelrooy are considered candidates for the coaching job. Other well-known club coaches such as André Breitenreiter, who also has a Schalke past, or Bruno Labbadia, Niko Kovac and Urs Firscher are also being considered.
