District league team GSG Duisburg fought their way to a crazy 5:5 (0:4) draw against Schwarz-Weiß Alstaden on the last matchday. The coach praised the team’s morale.
100 fans were on hand on Sunday afternoon at the Großenbaumer Allee for the district league match between GSG Duisburg and Schwarz-Weiß Alstaden. And the spectators did not regret coming.
Duisburg and Alstaden played a crazy exchange of blows that did not produce a winner after an intense 93 minutes – the game ended 5:5 (0:4). In the course of the game, the team from Großenbaum even had to substitute goalkeeper Christian Merks as an outfield player due to a lack of personnel.
Particularly impressive from the home side’s point of view: Duisburg were already 4-0 down at the break! With a brace each from George Michael Wiedemann and top scorer David Gehle, the team at the bottom of the league leveled the high deficit and the jubilation was great.
But when ex-RWO professional Raphael Steinmetz put Alstaden 5:4 ahead in the 86th minute, the race to catch up came to an abrupt end. Didn’t it? Wrong! Just one turn of the clock later, Gehle became the hero of the afternoon with his third goal and secured a well-deserved point for his team.
You almost can’t express this performance with words. A big compliment to the boys. As a coach, I don’t need a game like this every week.
Dietmar Schacht
GSG coach and ex-Schalke professional Dietmar Schacht was proud of his squad’s mentality: “Alstaden had four shots on goal in the first half and scored four times,” commented Schacht (WAZ), who saw “mad morale” from his beleaguered eleven in the second half. “You almost can’t express this performance with words. A big compliment to the boys. As a coach, I don’t need a game like this every week,” the 60-year-old praised afterwards.
With the point, Duisburg defended their eighth place in the table and are still five points behind Alstaden, who are in fourth place.
