Fan scene plans special event ahead of Bochum derby

This weekend, the Oberliga Westfalen derby between VfL Bochum’s U21 team and SG Wattenscheid will take place. Here’s what the visitors have planned.

The long wait is finally over. For the first time in almost a decade, VfL Bochum and SG Wattenscheid 09 will face each other in a competitive match. Bochum’s U21 team will host SGW in the Oberliga Westfalen.

And it’s going to be a big occasion. The derby will be played on Saturday (1 p.m., RS live ticker) at the Ruhrstadion. It’s difficult to predict how much interest there will be among VfL fans. The match almost clashes with the Bundesliga team’s away game at VfB Stuttgart (3.30 p.m., RS live ticker).

In Wattenscheid, the anticipation is growing. The active fan scene of the traditional club has come up with something special for the local derby. They are planning a joint trip to the Ruhrstadion, including a fan march.

The meeting point is at Wattenscheid train station at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. The train will then leave for Bochum main station at around 10:30 a.m. From there, the fan march to the stadium will begin, accompanied by the police. At the Ruhrstadion, all Wattenscheid fans will gather in Block F “to loudly support SG 09 in the Ruhrstadion and represent the Wattenscheid colors,” according to a statement.

According to SGW, anyone who does not yet have a ticket can still find some at local ticket outlets. On the day of the match, there will also be a box office in Bochum.

The importance of the match against the league leaders for Wattenscheid (14th place) is evident in the words chosen by the 09 captain after the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Gievenbeck. “The most important game of the season is coming up. We have to give 200 percent. In the stands and on the pitch. We want the derby win,” he told the fans.

However, the hosts are favorites, having lost only one game and won the last five. Wattenscheid remained unbeaten in the last two matchdays after a long losing streak.
