Fans ask ex-Schalke pro Max Meyer for contract extension

Max Meyer let an offer slip by at FC Luzern, the fans want clarity. Why is the ex-Schalker hesitating with his decision?

Contract number two is ready to be signed. And the fans of FC Luzern have been calling on Max Meyer on Instagram for some time to commit himself to the Swiss Super League club FC Luzern for another few years.

“Slowly, they want clarity as to whether he will stay beyond the summer or not,” writes the Swiss newspaper Blick, echoing the supporters’ pleas. However, the ex-Schalker has still not said anything about his future.

“We are still in good and open talks with Max and hope that we can announce a decision as soon as possible,” FCL sporting director Remo Meyer told Blick. One thing is clear: the first division club from central Switzerland would immediately extend the midfielder, who has had an eventful career and rediscovered the joy of soccer after numerous setbacks at FCL, where he enjoys the trust of those in charge.

Meyer is grateful for this and is enjoying his second spring, even though he left his first contract offer unanswered at the end of the year and has not always been happy with his substitutions recently. Neither is his girlfriend, by the way: according to Blick, she recently shouted “stupid or what” in the direction of the trainer’s bench.

No longer the great Schalke promise

Meyer has already worn the captain’s armband of the Swiss team for several weeks and his role as leader could be expanded in the long term, also because another key player in Ardon Jashari will probably be gone in the summer.

But why is Meyer still hesitating? Because, as a free agent, he is free to decide where he wants to continue his career (given the right offers). Because he might want to try again in a bigger league, perhaps even in the Bundesliga? And because he’s no longer the young Schalke promise but is now 28 years old, now there’s probably the last big contract. It’s all speculation, but it can definitely be proven that the FC Luzern officials and fans would like to see Max Meyer continue to wear the FCL jersey after the summer break
