FC Bayern confirms death – mourning for deceased fan

During the match against Lisbon, a tragic incident occurred in which a fan had to be given emergency treatment and later died.

FC Bayern is in mourning. The fan who was resuscitated several times during Munich’s Champions League match against Benfica Lisbon (1-0) on Wednesday evening died on the way to the hospital. This was announced by the German record champions on Thursday night.

“FC Bayern in mourning: Death overshadows 1-0 win against Lisbon,” said a message from the club. The success of coach Vincent Kompany’s team was “overshadowed by a sad event,” the Munich club said, adding that it stood “in mourning alongside the family.”

The club also reduced its coverage of the match. According to information from the Bild newspaper, an elderly man suffered a heart attack! Helpers and paramedics were quickly on the scene, and an emergency doctor attempted to resuscitate the man. A tarpaulin held by several stewards was used to shield the incident from the view of other spectators.

About an hour after the final whistle, Bayern received the “sad news” of the visitor’s death. Captain Manuel Neuer had reported shortly before that the victory had not been celebrated much in the dressing room because of the incident. Coach Vincent Kompany expressed his sympathy immediately after the game: “It’s hard to talk about football at the moment. We didn’t celebrate as we normally would after the game. We always hope that our fans and all fans go home healthy. Unfortunately, that was not the case today.“

Star player Thomas Müller paid tribute to the fans for stopping their support: ”When something like this happens, it’s also a nice sign of solidarity that the fans don’t just party on, but show a little humanity.”
