On the 30th matchday of the Westfalenliga 2, FC Brünninghausen celebrated an 8:2 victory against Westfalia Herne. Nevertheless, in the end it was not enough for first place and direct promotion.
The 30th matchday in the Westfalenliga 2 saw the final decision in the promotion race: Despite an 8:2 victory by FC Brünninghausen against relegated Westfalia Herne, the Dortmund team had to settle for second place in the final table, as rival Türkspor Dortmund did not allow itself any slip-ups and finished top of the table.
This means that Türkspor will be promoted directly to the Oberliga Westfalen, while Brünninghausen will have to play a deciding match for promotion against SC Peckeloh, who finished second in the other Westfalenliga division.
However, due to the withdrawal of the licence of the regional league team 1. FC Düren, this match threatens to become a farce, as in the case of a final ruling, both FCB and Peckeloh would be allowed to advance directly. The deciding match will still take place, even though it could be meaningless from a sporting point of view.
Rafik Halim, coach of the Brünninghausen side, emphasises that it is a difficult situation for everyone involved: “I would be lying if I said it was easy for us. To approach the whole week of training and the deciding match as if it’s really about something, that’s difficult. You have all the contingencies in your head, that completely unsettles a team. The last week was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, this back and forth about whether two will be promoted directly or whether there will be a deciding game. “
The FCB coach criticised the West German Football Association (WDFV) for the fact that a final verdict in the Düren affair is still a long time coming: “The high-ups in the association have to think of something else so that such a stand-off doesn’t take place.
The fact that the Dortmund team celebrated a furious season finale with an 8:2 victory and crowned their great season took a back seat. “We wanted to have a good end to the season, maintain our home record, and we succeeded. We also wanted to make it 1-0 early on to possibly make Türkspor nervous. They didn’t let it bother them, but we have nothing to reproach ourselves for and played an outstanding season. The fact that we are now in second place is something we would have signed before the season,” says Halim, summing up the last league game and the season.
Despite all the ambiguity, the 39-year-old is combative: “It is the way it is, we have to accept it and there is nothing we can do about it. Our goal is to win the game against Peckeloh and then we’ll see what happens, whether we’re rewarded or not. “
